The decision for a general refurbishment of the broadcaster’s headquarters was taken in 2014. All units and departments of the company will be relocated there, once the modernization is completed. Central to the construction plans is a multimedia newsroom for TV, radio and online media which will be the vocal point of the new flagship broadcasting house. The ambitious project is scheduled for completion in 2020, meanwhile the general refurbishment of the existing main building is almost done.
The old headquarters were designed and built by architect Roland Rainer from 1968 to 1976. The building conglomerate, often referred to as “castle” due to its characteristic arrangement of different building structures, is a landmark of post-war modernism. Therefore, the architects Riepl/Kaufmann/Bammer are determined to do justice to this unique structure and preserve its identity.
